Dr. Josie Zayner is a genetic designer, with a PhD in Biophysics from the University of Chicago and a past life engineering microbes for Mars at NASA. Josie left institutional science to do something more fun: Make genetic engineering accessible to everyone. In 2016, she founded The ODIN and built DIY gene editing kits for the masses. More recently, in 2024, Josie co-founded The Los Angeles Project (LAP), a venture-backed company working to genetically modify animals for agriculture, pets, and xenotransplantation. Somehow, between hacking genomes, pissing off institutions, and launching companies, she also finds time to make art, with work exhibited at San Francisco MoMA, NY MoMA, the Smithsonian, and beyond.
